Wels Catfish are no longer available for open sale, because of the risk of them becoming established in the wild after being released once they got to big.

Andy is correct. These fish were listed under the Prohibition of Keeping or Release of Live Fish (Specified Species) Order 1998 and you need to hold a special licence to keep one, although you're extremely unlikely to get a licence if you apply, so they're effectively illegal. There are more details in this article: Are your fish illegal?

Thank you for the information I did have some idea about the license you need to own them but didnít no they werenít available for open sale. however I do no some one at Stan borough lakes who might be able to sort something out as they are trying to remove the catfish I saw someone catch one and liked the thought of having one as a pet so thatís why I was asking in the first place.

Wels are not covered by the general licence. Both fishkeepers and retailers need to apply for a licence to keep them, Luke.
